Volunteer
English Class Assistant
Helen Bamber Foundation, Central London
Thursdays 2.30 – 5.30pm ongoing as agreed

The Helen Bamber Foundation is looking for English class assistants to support our Creative Arts Programme.

The class meets weekly at the Helen Bamber Foundation, a human rights organisation that provides therapeutic (medical and psychological) and practical support to survivors of human rights violations. We are a collective of therapists, doctors, case workers, administrators and artists dedicated to alleviating the suffering in the lives of our clients.

The English class is one of 6 groups offered within the Creative Arts Programme, part of our holistic approach to rehabilitation. We already run one English class which has proved to be extremely popular, and as such we would have started a second class. We are currently running a beginners class between 2.30pm and 3.30pm and an intermediate class between 3.30pm and 5.30pm and are looking for volunteers to help with both classes. Please specific which you are interested in. The successful candidates would observe and assist with the current English classes, would work closely with the current English teacher and would also have the opportunity to lead the classes if required.

The specific duties and responsibilities and person specification are below:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teaching informal conversation classes to clients with a variety of English language needs in a group setting.
  • Compiling resources for the classes.
  • Lesson planning.
  • Assisting in facilitating a secure environment in which to work.
  • Assessing the language level of clients and meeting their needs accordingly.
  • Undertaking other duties as required.

Role Requirements:
  • Available to commit to assisting a 2 – 2.5 hour class during working hours.
  • Availability to attend any training relevant to the volunteer role.
  • An ESOL qualification.
  • Previous experience working with refugees would be an advantage.
Person Specification:
  • Kind, organised, reliable and friendly.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Team player, with experience of working with a wide range of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to think on their feet and be flexible.

Please send a covering letter and CV to stephanie@helenbamber.org.
There is no deadline for applications.
For more information on the format and structure of the classes, please contact us via email.

Opportunities will arise in the following areas:

Administrators
Our work with survivors of human rights violations requires a considerable amount of administrative support including data entry, file management, correspondence and photocopying to assist our clinical and legal teams. We offer 3-month internships in this particular area.

Events support team
HBF has monthly fundraising and awareness events meetings. We encourage members of this team to create new event opportunities in order to raise much-needed funds for the Foundation. In addition, we have volunteers who offer their time at specific fundraising events. These opportunities arise on an ad-hoc basis.

Grant Research
Volunteers work on researching data which forms part of HBF's fundraising strategy this includes exploring grants from potential funders.

If there is nothing which catches your interest or fits within your area of specialty, please do keep checking the website as we will update the page when vacancies become available.

Unfortunately, as we are a small organisation with limited resources we cannot respond to unsolicited applications. We do, however, keep these on file and will contact you should anything suitable become available.

Please send your CV and covering letter to volunteer@helenbamber.org
