Events and activities, 2008 07 February 2009 January 2008 IOM Conference on Trafficking in Warsaw Michael gave the keynote address at the International Organization for Migration (IOM) conference on Psychological Support for Victims of Trafficking in Warsaw, Poland. Michaels talk addressed trafficking, and how to communicate crucial issues associated with it. Read more Education February 2008 UN.GIFT Conference in Vienna Helen participated at the UN.GIFT (United Nations Global Initiative Fight Trafficking) Conference as part of the Women Leaders Council. JOURNEY was a centre of attention at the Hofburg Palace for five days. Helens offered case studies and emphasized that trafficking is a form of torture. Read more About JOURNEY Education June 2008 Keynote address at Camden Councils Award Ceremony Helen gave the keynote address at Camden Councils Refugee Pupils Achievement Awards Ceremony. The awards were given to young asylum seekers who had excelled academically and in their communities. The Speech Day was attended by students, staff and family members. Read more Education July 2008 IPPNW Conference in Berlin Helen spoke at the IPPNW (International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War) Conference on the issues facing asylum seekers and refugees in Berlin. Read more Advocacy August 2008 Namibian Parliamentary Delegation We welcomed Womens Caucus representatives from the Republic of Namibia. The delegation was interested to hear about our support for victims of trafficking. We arranged a programme, which included a visit to the Centre for Gender Studies in Cambridge, Medact, Anti-Slavery International and the Poppy Project. Read more Advocacy August 2008 Mortimer Market Sexual Health Clinic Lucy did a presentation for health professionals at the Mortimer Market Sexual Health Clinic on the health issues facing victims of trafficking and how we work with them. Read more Education and Healthcare September 2008 Liverpool Torture Survivors Centre Helen and Lucy participated in the launch of the Liverpool Torture Survivors Centre. The aim of the Centre is to provide healthcare facilities and counseling. Helen and Lucy contributed best practice advice and support. Michaels presentation focused on working with survivors of torture and those unlawfully detained. Read more Education September 2008 Law enforcement in Bratislava Michael offered training seminars in Bratislava, Slovakia, to local law enforcement officials, lawyers, judges and police on responding to victims of trafficking. His topics included best practices when interviewing victims of trafficking, and providing essential protection and support. Lucy talked to the Reading chapter of Amnesty International, focusing on trafficking and our work. Read more Education October 2008 Launch of Asylum Aids Womens Charter in House of Commons Helen spoke at the launch of the Charter for Women Seeking Asylum at the House of Commons. The event was attended by parliamentarians, NGOs, and members of the public. Helen spoke about the need for protection and rehabilitation of women seeking asylum in the UK, and gave the Charter our seal of approval. Read more Advocacy October 2008 UCLs Medsin Conference Lucy facilitated a workshop at the annual Medsin Conference held at University College London. Medsin members are student doctors, nurses and health professionals in training. Lucy spoke on identifying of victims of torture, and the physical and psychological support they need. Read more Education and Healthcare October 2008 All-Party Group on Trafficking at the House of Commons Helen attended the launch of the Pan-European Anti-Trafficking initiative at the House of Commons, hosted by Anthony Steen, MP who chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Trafficking of Women and Children. Read more Advocacy November 2008 Cambridge Film Festival Michael was invited to a film festival hosted by New Hall College, Cambridge. Michael showed our virals, and led a discussion about human trafficking and our work. Students from the University of Cambridge participated in the discussion following the screenings. Read more I Am Elena Education November 2008 Motherland Performance Helen spoke at the Portcullis House performance of Motherland, a theatre event about women and children who are detained at Yarls Wood Detention Centre. Helens observations followed the performance, which was attended by parliamentarians, NGOs and members of the public. Juliet Stevenson read testimony from two of our clients, and the evening culminated with a musical piece performed by another client. Michael has been invited back to present in 2009. Read more Advocacy November 2008 Keynote address to STAR conference Helen delivered the keynote address at the Annual Conference of STAR (Student Action for Refugees) in London. Read more Education November 2008 Training local law enforcement agencies in Cyprus Michael offered a training session to local law enforcement agencies, police enforcement personnel, lawyers and judges on responding to victims of trafficking. This conference was held in conjunction with a local Cypriot organization that works with survivors of trafficking.
