The Helen Bamber Foundation is committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about how we use your data. We will only use the information that we collect about you lawfully.
This page tells you about how the Helen Bamber Foundation, and a small number of third parties working on our behalf, collect and use the information relating to all website users. These include donors, subscribers and prospective employees and volunteers. For information about how we use personal information about our clients, please see our separate client privacy policy here, contact us at info@helenbamber.org.
1. Why do we collect information?
We need to collect some personal information from you so that we can respond to you appropriately. For example, we need some personal details in order to process your donation, thank you for your support and, if you have subscribed to our updates, provide you with news about the Foundation’s work and upcoming events.
We also collect information to see how our website, social media channels and emails are performing. We do this by looking at the information you provide to us, in combination with statistical information collected from our website (see section 2.4 website tracking below) to supplement our knowledge and to research, profile and analyse the data we hold.
This helps us to improve how we communicate with you and grow our network of supporters. It helps us ensure that we use your generous donations cost-effectively, focus on communications that our supporters value and helps us plan for the future.
Sometimes we conduct research about our current and prospective donors using information that is available publicly. This helps us understand how you may want or be able to support us, to communicate with you in the best possible way and grow our network of supporters.
2. What information do we collect and how do we collect it?
We don’t receive any personal information about you other than what you provide to us, either by making a donation, subscribing to emails, fundraising for us or writing to us directly.
Sometimes your personal information is provided to us directly from you, for example when you apply to volunteer with us through our website. Other times we collect and use personal information indirectly, through our third party processors such as Eventbrite and JustGiving.
These third parties are independent data processors and as such, are not subject to this privacy policy. However, they have been carefully chosen and we ensure that legal agreements are in place to govern how they use your information. You can read more about how these third party processors use your information in their privacy policies here:
The information we collect and the ways in which we do this is set out below.
2.1 Making donations
When you make a single or regular donation to the Foundation, we need your contact and bank details to process the donation and thank you for your support. Your information is collected by one of three secure payment gateways for one-off donations (JustGiving, Virgin Money Giving and CAF) and through Direct Debit for regular giving.
In the case of a suspected fraudulent transaction, card details may be disclosed to the Helen Bamber Foundation for the sole purpose of performing further checks.
When you make a donation you are able to opt-in to receive further updates from us to keep you informed about our work and upcoming fundraising opportunities. However, if you would not like to receive further contact from us, beyond that which is necessary to complete the transaction, you can let us know via the donation form or by contacting us. We will not contact you without your consent to do so.
2.2 Subscribing to email updates
We invite individuals to sign up to receive regular email updates about our work. These include opportunities to support our campaigns and attend our events. These requests for support are important to help us continue providing the highest quality care to some of the most marginalised and vulnerable people in the UK.
We aim to give you control over what information you do and don’t receive from the Helen Bamber Foundation and you can update your preferences or unsubscribe at any time by:
- Clicking the ‘unsubscribe’ link at the footer of our emails to indicate that you do not wish to receive our fundraising or campaigning updates.
- Contacting our fundraising team and requesting your details be removed. E: info@helenbamber.org
2.3 Applying for job and volunteer opportunities
When you apply for a volunteer or job opportunity directly through our website, we will need to collect information about you including your employment history and your contact details so we can contact you about your application.
Your records will be held securely by us, either electronically or in hard-copy whilst we consider your application. If your application is unsuccessful, we will keep your data until 5 months after the decision was made. We will keep your records on our system for 5 months post-decision (if unsuccessful) and for 6 years after your last day working with us (if successful). Applicants for job or volunteering opportunities will only hear from us in relation to their application.
If you apply to work or volunteer with us via Charity Jobs, the information you provide will be subject to Charity Jobs’ own privacy policy which you can access here.
If you have any questions about the application process, please contact us at carole.mercier@helenbamber.org.
2.4 Website visit tracking

3. How do we keep your information safe?
We take all relevant steps necessary to secure and safeguard your personal information. All personal information stored electronically is kept on secure servers, with access restricted to appropriate staff for as long as is necessary for the fulfilment of our legal obligations or our obligations to you as a supporter, applicant or service user.
All staff are trained appropriately on our data protection policies. We continue to review and update these policies in line with current and upcoming data protection regulations and staff are informed appropriately.
Donations made to us via our website are processed through third party providers. Your information is kept secure on these forms using encryption. All transactions are covered by the Direct Debit Guarantee. You can find Worldpay’s privacy policy here.
Please note that while we have taken every appropriate measure to secure your data, transmission of information over the Internet is never 100% secure so while we take all possible precautions, we cannot guarantee the security of any information you submit to us via our website.
4. How is your information shared?
The Helen Bamber Foundation will only share information about you where you have given your explicit consent to do so, for example when we send you communications about our work, or we are required by law, like providing Gift Aid information to HMRC.
