In 2023, we were a source of power for the survivors we work with as well as for our partners and sister organisations across the UK and internationally. At a time when our own government actively sought to reduce accountability and scrutiny of their policies by the courts – a key pillar of democracy – we stepped up to engage and transform, and, where necessary, challenge.
During 2022, the Helen Bamber Foundation Group supported more than 700 survivors of trafficking and torture and 870 vulnerable individuals with welfare advice. 69% of the survivors that had been provided with the Helen Bamber Foundation’s model of integrated care saw improvements in their wellbeing and mental health. We also grew our support of the wider sector by building partnerships and providing training to other organisations and statutory services, enabling them to deliver the trauma-focused care and high-quality representation that survivors need.
It is hard to put 2020 into words. We began the year optimistic about our ability to grow and create new support pathways for our clients. Then along with the rest of the world we were forced to modify our plans rapidly and one of the key questions became how we could make sure that our services to Survivors didn’t stop.
In 2019 the Helen Bamber Foundation not only strengthened our service for survivors of trafficking and torture but also focused on using our unique voice and expertise to influence positive change in both the refugee and trafficking sectors in the UK and Globally.
It has been my pleasure and privilege to join the team at the Helen Bamber Foundation (HBF) this year, to build on Helen’s and the Foundation’s remarkable legacy. The Foundation is a special place - in the services it offers, the culture it promotes and the people it supports. Our clients are at the centre of all we do. We bear witness to their suffering so that their voices are heard, their truths told. Our success as an organisation is a testament to our clients’ resilience and bravery. We hope that you too will be inspired by their stories. I am proud to share with you the Annual Report and financial statements for HBF for the year ended 31 December 2018.
