We are looking for an honorary assistant psychologist to join our therapy team.

We need someone who:

  • Has completed a psychology (with GBR) or other related degree or is in the process of completion.
  • Has a keen interest in working in the area of mental health for asylum seekers, refugees and victims of trafficking.
  • Has direct experience working with people who have mental health problems.
  • Is looking to develop their clinical skills and expertise.
  • Has experience working with databases and using programs such as Excel/SPSS.
  • Has strong organisational skills.
  • Is available 1 day a week for at least 6 months (Monday-Thursday only).

This is a client-facing role and prospective applicants will need to be able to travel to our offices in London for face-to-face work.  Travel expenses to and from our offices will be reimbursed.

Your role would include:

  • Conducting initial assessments for people newly referred into our service to ascertain their legal, social, and psychological needs and to assess their suitability for our services;
  • Conducting structured care plan reviews with clients to monitor their progress over time;
  • Completing standardised measures with clients for research and therapeutic purposes;
  • Shadowing and working with clinical psychologists;
  • Completing casework with clients;
  • Attending regular clinical supervision;
  • Entering data and contributing to audits and reports which will help us to improve how we support our clients and secure funding for vital projects;
  • Assisting with preparation of materials for group/workshops we offer;
  • Based on experience and progression in the role, there may be opportunities for some individual therapeutic ‘stabilisation’ work with clients.

We particularly encourage applications from underrepresented groups in Clinical Psychology (such as people with disabilities, men, those from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds or those who have lived experience similar to those of the clients we support).

Please note that the successful candidates will be offered the role subject to suitable references and a DBS check. This role will require disclosure of both the adult and child barring lists. If appointed, you will be required to give your consent to HBF to receive regular updates on your criminal records status throughout your time volunteering with us.

How to apply?

  • To apply for this position, please email your CV and a cover letter (including which day you are available to volunteer at HBF and specifying which role you are applying for) by 5pm on Thursday 20th August to volunteering@helenbamber.org.

  • We anticipate that interviews will take place w/c 24th August 2026.

  • Please note that applications will be capped at 20, meaning that if we receive more than 20 applications whilst the application window is open, no new applications will be accepted.

  • Please note that unfortunately, due to capacity we are only able to contact successful candidates shortlisted for interview.

Equal Opportunities

Our commitment to principles of equity, diversity and inclusion is an integral part of our approach to our clients, our volunteers and our staff, and we are an equal opportunities and Living Wage employer. We are committed to attracting and recruiting diverse candidates because we are keen to make sure that all our staff, trustees, volunteers and ambassadors reflect the communities we serve and the wider community we work in.

We genuinely welcome and encourage applications from a range of backgrounds, especially people of colour, people with disabilities, people from low socio-economic backgrounds, refugees, stateless people and others with lived experience of forced migration or trauma.

Statement on artificial intelligence (AI) and recruitment

At the Helen Bamber Foundation / Asylum Aid we don’t make decisions based on artificial intelligence (AI). We have a human approach to hiring and all applications are reviewed and assessed by our team. Similarly, what we are most interested in hearing about is your individual motivation, experience, skills and values. AI doesn’t know about you or what motivates you – we want to hear from you.

AI may be a helpful tool, but typically leads to generic answers repeated by multiple candidates, not stand out applications. Please make sure that your responses reflect your own thoughts and experiences.
